Straddling the
regions of Garhwal and Kumaon in Indian Himalayas in the state of
Uttaranchal, Nanda Devi (7816 m) Mountain Range, is the geographical
and spiritual high point of India. Surrounding Nanda Devi Peak is
an incredible expanse of mighty 6000 and 7000 metre mountains. Nanda
Devi's inner sancturay is currently off limits to climbers and trekkers.
The Nanda Devi National Park is the most spectacular wilderness
areas in the Indian Himalayas. It is dominated by the peak of Nanda
Devi. Because of its inaccessibility no humans live in the park,
as a result of which it has remained more or less intact. The beauty
of the Nanda Devi park is ornamented due to the habitation of several
endangered mammals, especially the snow leopard, Himalayan musk
deer and bharal.
However at one time it was the coveted destination of several early
20th century expeditions all of which failed to reach the sancturay
until Eric Shipton and Bill Tilman reached it via the Rishi Ganga
gorge in 1932. Tilman eventually climbed the main peak for the first
time in 1936.
Ever since the closure of the Nanda Devi sanctuary by the Indian
Government, the access to Nand Devi East is possible from the beautiful
Johar valley whose gateway is the small Himalayan town of Munsyari.
With our operational base at Munsyari, we offer you a variety of
high altitude treks in the Nanda Devi region.
